NIGHTCAPS

Nightcaps, a little town in Southland, New Zealand was aptly named after early settlers who often witnessed fog on tops of the surrounding hills. This was reminiscent of the nightcaps often worn to bed in this era for warmth. CRONZ adopted the town’s namesake for a style made of speciality felted wool yarn which cut ends replicate the colour change of the hills surrounding Nightcaps.  

The felted core yarn is the brainchild of our local felted yarn supplier and is made by wrapping wool around a central yarn during the felting process, resulting in a core to a standard felted wool yarn. This can then be dyed a different colour to the wrapper (outer) wool colour giving a ‘dot’ in the cut ends. With the choice of a core colour and an outer colour, colour combinations are endless. The J tuft stitch formation means the core colour is exposed in every thread and forms a shaggy pile. Core yarn is often used to incorporate a highlight or feature colour from the room into the rug in a subtle way.  

While core yarn wool has been the primary yarn used in this style, we have also used felted 2500 tex or 3600 tex yarn in one colour to build a strong one colour finish. J tuft means the stitch is formed in the shape of the letter J, so one end shorter than the other. This creates movement in the structure so you are seeing the cut and the side of the yarn, highlighting the lustre of the felted wool. 

Typically, we tuft Nightcaps at 15/25mm pile height but this can be customised where a shorter, more cropped finish or on the contrary, a longer, deep textural rug is required.
