Favourite Rugs of 2020
As we head into the new year (gosh, can’t believe it’s February already!), we like to look back at some of our favourite custom rug projects of the past year. We have done so many it’s very hard to choose which to showcase, but these certainly make the list.
Fantail
Fantail design was created for a commercial space, Kiwibank’s newest branch in Auckland. The brief was simple - modern, brightly coloured, and Kiwi.
The design reflects the beauty of a well-known native New Zealand bird, done in a lively fashion using bright hues. The main inspiration was the tail of the bird which is quite tall and as the name implies, is often displayed fanned out. Feather fragments of the fantail bird were sketched and juxtaposed in a circle to form the modern and bold Kiwiana design.
Unity
Unity is an elegant and confident rug made for an Auckland client’s hallway. It is an expression of harmony & balance between the modern and the traditional.
Unity is a contemporary take on traditional oriental rug patterns. The design’s foundation is a circular motif, precisely drawn in a vector-based software and repeated.
Majority of the runner was made in NZ wool, with a couple of areas in bamboo silk to add a portion of lustre.
Effusion
Effusion rug was to brighten dark surfaces in an entrance way through the use of light and blended pattern.
Effusion design was developed over a number of photographs and water-inspired imagery.
Manufacturing of Effusion was rather complex due to the use of mixed colours in some areas and small scale. However, we enjoyed it. It’s usually the challenging projects that turn out to be the most rewarding.
